Sinulog comes from the Cebuano adverb sulog which roughly means like water current movement; it describes the forward-backward movement of the Sinulog dance. The dance consists of two steps forward and one step backward, done to the beat of drums.

The Sinulog celebration is more than just the popular street dancing, more than just the parade, parties and night out’s, the rhythm of drums, trumpets and native gongs…

The Sinulog celebration presents the image of the child Jesus, the Santo Niño, as the baptismal gift to the Cebuano’s. It is the moment of receiving the holy image as symbol of our Catholicism and acceptance to the Roman Catholic Church.

The deep essence of the Sinulog festival – the people’s faith , novena / mass, the prayers, the solemn procession, the fluvial reenactment, the child Jesus itself being praised… captured through my viewfinder.

It is faith that strengthens a man, he shall find that there is no longer the need to have a sense of control, that things will flow as they will, and that you will flow with them. Beginnings are usually scary and endings are usually sad, but it’s everything in between that makes it all worth living.

Devotees to the Santo Niño has grown and has taken root in Philippine popular piety, particularly in the Visayas; pilgrims from different parts of Cebu and the rest of the Philippines make their yearly journey to the church to take part in the procession, the novena mass and festival – the Sinulog, 2012. Viva Pit Señor!

We will open the book. Its pages are blank.
We are going to put words on them ourselves.
The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.

Sunrise offered a very beautiful spectacle; the water was quite unruffled, but the motion communicated by the tides was so great that, although there was not a breath of air stirring, the sea heaved slowly with a grand and majestic motion.
